Andros was once populated by the Lucayan Indians who eventually were replaced by the settling Europeans. Andros hailed as the wrecking base for the infamous pirate, Captain Morgan. Remaining dormant until 1845, Andros Fibre Company was established to manufacture sisal for use in manufacturing rope. The company departed (late 1920's) leaving the island with severe unemployment problems and wondering what to do next?
After several attempts to establish manufacturing processes, the island turned to tourism. And what a good choice this proved to be, Andros's has flourished as more and more people discover the beauty of this nearly deserted tropical island. Andros has four airports; to the north, San Andros, in the center, Andros Town, and to the south, Mangrove Cay and Congo Town. You can fly direct (Airport of Entry) to all but Mangrove Cay Airport. Chickcharnie Hotel
The Chickcharnie Hotel gets its name from a mystical animal that is said to be half human and half bird. The myth alleges that this animal lures individuals into the pine forest and loses them. If you see one do not let them see you, because they will automatically make you dizzy, and you will never find your way out of the pine forest. This Hotel is quite a distance away from the forest, so we have very little to fear.
